VPS Hosting - Getting Started

Welcome to the VPS hosting! On this page, you can get all the basics right to get started with your online project.

With a VPS hosting plan, you open a world of possibilities that would not be possible on Shared hosting because of restrictions. This article is created to help you set up your VPS easily and quickly.

You can always refer to the VPS section in our Knowledgebase where the most frequently asked questions are covered. In case you need prompt assistance, you can get in touch with us via Live Chat 24/7.

The Basics

Going for a VPS implies that you have basic server management knowledge and skills. There are a few useful links to start with:
  • Basic Unix Commands which you can find here
  • Linux documentation can be downloaded here

Nameservers

To configure your nameservers, you will need to register personal nameservers for your hosting in the following way:

Step 1: Register your personal nameservers
Step 2: Set up your personal nameservers
Once done, it will be necessary to set up nameservers on your server as described here .

SolusVM

You will use the SolusVM software in order to manage your VPS (reboot server, change password, reinstall OS, and many more options). All the login information and links are provided in your Virtual Server Details email.
You can access SolusVM by using the details from the email or via the Namecheap account panel. A detailed SolusVM guide can be found here .

cPanel/WHM

NOTE: This paragraph is applicable only to those who own a VPS server with cPanel/WHM license.

Additionally, to the basics of the OS installed on your server, you need to know some basic information about control panels. Refer to the guidelines below to find out more about the control panels we provide:

WHM (WebHost Manager) is a hosting control panel that allows you to manage individual cPanel accounts, modify plan settings, control the custom cPanel modules and features, and many more. To configure initial WHM settings follow our step-by-step guide. If you purchase a new plan, it goes with the initial WHM account only, and you will need to create the cPanel account as described here .

In cPanel the control panel is designed for managing separate hosting accounts on the server. You can check the cPanel overview here.

More details about the structure of WHM/cPanel users, depending on their permissions, can be found in this article .

SSH

SSH is used for VPS management through the command line. You can find our step-by-step guide on how to access a hosting account via SSH here .

Security

Good security practices on your VPS are paramount. As this is a virtualized root environment, if your VPS account gets compromised, this can result in a series of unwelcome scenarios including data loss.

Make sure that:
  • all logins are secure (SSH/SSL). You can find how to keep SSH protected here .
  • you regularly check and update all scripts on your VPS
  • your password is strong and hard-to-guess

Initially, we set up a strong password for your VPS. It is necessary for you to change it to an equally hard-to-guess one.

cPanel/WHM comes by default with the cPHulk brute force protection combined with ConfigServer firewall to filter the unwanted traffic, suspicious login details, and permanently block certain IP addresses. When it comes to monitoring email-related abuse activities, you may find our guide on how to locate email spamming and harden the anti-spam security policies on the server useful.

You are the one responsible for your VPS security. However, if you happen to be concerned about the security of your VPS or believe you may have a security breach, please urgently contact us via Live Chat.

CXS

To add more security to the account, you can protect your VPS plan with the CXS Anti-malware solution . It can be purchased separately at $60 one-time payment or you can use it for free as a part of a Complete management plan. This tool can be used for scanning the server to detect and mitigate various types of malware.

NOTE: This option is available only for VPS Quasar. If you are an owner of VPS Pulsar with Complete management scans can be made by our technicians by request. The reason for that is VPS Pulsar tech specs are not sufficient for CXS installation.

Backups

We provide external backup services for the servers with Complete management; otherwise, you will need to handle data backup on your own.

This article covers the full cPanel backup creation and restoration process. You can also schedule automatic backups using the following script .

Your VPS and Resources

We offer two VPS packages and they come with a different amount of allocated resources:

Disk space
Bandwidth (data transfer)
CPU
Memory

It is important to understand that the OS and control panel use some disk space so you will not get 100% usage for your website/files.

You can check your current resource usage using SSH. Log in using your root password and run the top command. This will display results similar to:

top - 22:48:47 up 12 days, 11:55, 1 user, load average: 0.25, 0.21, 0.40
Tasks: 45 total, 2 running, 41 sleeping, 0 stopped, 2 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni,100.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 524288k total, 143592k used, 380696k free, 0k buffers
Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cache

You can also check the status of your server resources in your SolusVM control panel.

IP Addresses

Only one IP address is assigned to your virtual server by default. So, if you would like to request more IP addresses allowed by quota, please submit a ticket to our Billing/Sales department proving us the reasons.
