EasyWP: How to get your website indexed by Google

Making sure your new website shows up on top search engines like Google is probably one of your biggest goals.

Getting your site crawled and indexed by Google can take time – but in this article, you’ll learn a few key tips to speed up the process.

Before we dive in, let’s break down what the Google Crawler does and how indexing actually works.

Google Crawler, also known as Googlebot, is a web robot made up of many computers that scan and fetch pages across the internet.

When it lands on a page, it collects all the links on that page and adds them to a queue for future crawling.

Googlebot doesn’t waste time on spam. It uses advanced inspection technology to check if a page is trustworthy before crawling it. By gathering links from every page it visits, Googlebot quickly maps out a huge portion of the web. This allows Google to discover and index new content at scale.

How to make Google discover your website:
1. Create a sitemap
2. Submit your website to Google Search Console Tools
3. Verify the domain at Google Search Console Tools
4. Update your website constantly and let search engines know about it
5. Optimize your website

1. Create a sitemap

The first essential step is to create a sitemap for your website. A sitemap is a file that lists all your site's web pages, helping Googlebots crawl them more efficiently and intelligently.

You can use the Yoast SEO plugin to create a sitemap, a highly popular and trusted plugin that is fully compatible with EasyWP. You won’t need to tweak your web server configuration or add any extra rules. Explore how to install and disable a plugin for your WordPress site.

NOTE: We recommend creating a backup of your WordPress website before performing any changes.

The sitemap is generated automatically after activating the Yoast SEO plugin. To check the sitemap, you need to open the plugin’s settings, scroll down, and select the "View the XML sitemap" button:

2. Submit your website to Google Search Console Tools

Once your sitemap is ready, head to Google Search Console and submit it.
You’ll need to log in with your Google Account. This step helps Google better understand your site’s structure and can significantly speed up crawling.

Once ready, select Add a Property (1), enter your domain name (2), and select Continue (3) to submit your website to Google Search Console:

Then, copy the verification TXT record:

After copying the value of the record, you need to create a TXT record for the domain name. If your domain name uses Namecheap nameservers, learn how to create the TXT records.

NOTE: It may take up to 30-60 minutes for the DNS record to be applied globally. Learn more about DNS Propagation.

Next, select Verify to proceed.

You will see the message about the successful verification:

NOTE: If it’s been over 60 minutes and you're still running into issues, contact your DNS provider to double-check the TXT record.

3. Verify the domain at Google Search Console Tools

The next step is to submit your website's sitemap to Google Search Console.

To start, navigate to the Sitemaps menu:

Then, simply paste the link to your sitemap and select Submit.

You can copy the link to your sitemap in Yoast SEO >> Settings >> View the XML sitemap:

If you’re using a different plugin to create your sitemap, check the plugin’s settings, reach out to their support team, or ask a web developer to help you find your sitemap link.

You will see the following message about the successful sitemap submission:

If something isn’t working at this stage, double-check your sitemap link. Make sure it’s correct – and if the issue persists, reach out to the Google Support Team for help.

4. Update your website constantly and let search engines know about it

It is essential to regularly update your website with new posts and references, and inform search engines about these updates to keep the indexed information about your website fresh and up-to-date.

If you've added or made changes to a page on your site, you can ask Google to recrawl your URLs.

5. Optimize your website

In order to simplify and speed up the crawling process, you should keep your website fast, clean-coded, and optimized.

2) How to optimize your WordPress database;
3) 15 best WordPress SEO plugins and tools.

NOTE: Avoid using any plugins that are incompatible with the EasyWP architecture. The list of plugins can be found at the end of this guide, under Blocked plugins.

Once you’ve completed all the steps above, your website is well-positioned to be discovered and indexed by Google. Creating a sitemap, submitting your site through Google Search Console, verifying your domain, and keeping your content updated are all key actions that help Google understand and prioritize your site.
