Private Email account setup in eM Client

This tutorial will show you how to set up a Namecheap Private Email account in eM Client. You can use either automatic or manual setup in eM Client.

eM Client is a desktop email client for Windows and macOS.

If you do not have eM Client yet, you can download it here. A Free eM Client license is also available — it allows up to two accounts to be added, and gives users access to email, calendar, contacts, and task management.

NOTE: Before setting up a mailbox in the email client, please double-check that your domain name has the correct Private Email DNS records and that the mailbox has been created.

We will be using a test email account test@nctest.us in this tutorial.

Automatic Setup

Please note that the automatic setup works only when allPrivate Email DNS records are configured for your domain.

1. To add a new account, click Menu >> Accounts and click + Add account.

If you are opening eM Client for the first time, you won’t need to do this, as you’ll be prompted for an email address right away.

2. Input your Private Email address in the textbox and click Start.

3. You will need to fill in your account details:

  • Your name — the name that will be shown to your recipients.
  • Account name — what your account will be named in eM Client (it is pre-filled as your email address by default).

4. On the Encryption step, choose the option Continue without encryption. Don’t worry — your emails will still be sent using a secure encrypted connection. This step is for setting up an additional layer of security.

5. Feel free to customize these settings to your preference and click Finish:

6. After that, you will be prompted to enter your Private Email password in the pop-up window:

TIP: Check the Save Password option so you won’t have to input it every time you open the app.

7. Give it a moment to sync your emails.

Manual Setup

You can use these steps if the automatic setup fails for you.

1. To add a new account, click Menu >> Accounts, and click + Add account:

2. When adding a new account, expand the Mail section and select Other:

3. Input your Private Email address in the textbox and click Next:

4. Now, fill in the following details:
Incoming server: mail.privateemail.com
User name: Your Private Email email address
Password: Password for your Private Email account

5. The configuration details for the outgoing server will be pre-filled. Double-check they match these before you move to the next step:

Outgoing server: mail.privateemail.com
User name: Your Private Email email address
Password: Password for your Private Email account

6. eM Client will now test the connection. If the tests pass, click Next:

If your SMTP test fails, go to the previous step, update the outgoing server as below, and click Next:

Outgoing server: mail.privateemail.com:465

7. Now, update the following fields to your preference:

  • Your name — the name that will be shown to your recipients.
  • Account name — what your account will be named in eM Client - it is pre-filled as your email address by default.

8. On the Encryption step, choose Continue without encryption. No worries — your emails will still be sent using a secure encrypted connection, this step is for setting up an additional layer of security.

9. Feel free to customize your account with an avatar and set your sync options. This will import your messages from Private Email for the time period selected. Once you’re happy, click Finish:

10. Wait a bit for the account to sync. Once the setup is complete, you will see a test message in your email client:

Success! Your email account is ready.
