How to configure OpenVPN on OpenSUSE?

This guide will guide through the setup of OpenVPN commection on OpenSUSE Linux distributions. We are using OpenSUSE Leap 15.3 for demonstration purposes.

To set up OpenVPN on OpenSUSE, you will need:

Follow the steps below to configure OpenVPN on OpenSUSE:

1. Before setting up the VPN connection, please make sure that your Network Settings are handled by the Network Manager:

- Go to the Activities, search for Yast and open it:

- Open Network Settings:

- Under Global Options, check that Network Setup Method is set to Network Manager.

- Click OK:

2. The next step in setting up the OpenVPN client on OpenSUSE is to obtain the ovpn configuration files:

- Access the Terminal on your CentOS machine:

- Enter the following command to select a folder for FastVPN configs:

cd Downloads

- Type the following command in the terminal window to save the OpenVPN file from our repository:


- Unzip the configs files into selected directory by typing the following command and pressing Enter:


Once done, the unzipped configuration files will be shown in the terminal window:

After the unzip is complete, and the prompt appears, move to the next step.

3. Close the Terminal window, click on the Network icon in the top right of the screen and select Network Settings:

4. In the Network section, click the + button and move on to the next step:

5. Click Import from file…

6. Select your preferred TCP or UDP OpenVPN configuration that was downloaded earlier from your Downloads folder (e.g. NCVPN-AU-Melbourne-TCP.ovpn).

Once the configuration file has been chosen, click the Open button in the top right corner as shown below:

7. Wait till the selected OpenVPN config file is imported into the Add VPN window and configure the following settings:

  • Enter a desired connection name in the Name field
  • Enter the server address in the Gateway field
  • Type: Password
  • User Name: FastVPN Account Username from the FastVPN Account Panel
  • Password: FastVPN Account Password from the FastVPN Account Panel

Click IPv6 in the menu on the left and disable IPv6 (as shown below). After that, click the Add button:

8. Once your new OpenVPN configuration is installed, you should see the newly created OpenVPN connection listed in the menu on the left in the Network window. Toggle the VPN connection to the position ON to connect to Fast VPN:

9. If the VPN connection is successful, you will see the following icon:

To confirm that your IP address has changed to an anonymous and private FastVPN VPN IP, open your web browser and go to
10. To disconnect from Fast VPN, select VPN Connection and click Turn Off:
