If you would like to use the Big Cartel service along with the hosting package you have with Namecheap, follow the steps listed below:
1. Log into cPanel.
2. Navigate to Domains section and select Zone Editor:
3. Choose the domain you wish to use the Big Cartel service for.
4. Locate the CNAME record you have for a www subdomain and press the Edit button right next to it.
In the Record field, enter the URL of your custom Big Cartel site and Save Record.
Here are the records this CNAME record should have:
- Name: www.yourdomain.com
- TTL: 1200
- Type: CNAME
- Record: yoursite.bigcartel.com
NOTE: yoursite.bigcartel.com should be replaced with the actual name of your Big Cartel store including .bigcartel.com
5. Now you need to create an automated redirect to www.yourdomain.com. To do so, move to File Manager menu:
Navigate to the root folder for your domain name and locate .htaccess file. Make sure that Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) option is enabled in Settings > Preferences menu:
6. If you still cannot find .htaccess, create a new one using File option:
7. Right-click on .htaccess file > Edit. Add the following redirect rule:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]
NOTE: Make sure that you replace yourdomain.com with the actual domain name you configure Big Cartel for.
Once done, Save Changes.
8. Now you can enter your custom domain in your Big Cartel admin dashboard in Store > Settings > Domains menu. Enter your full custom URL (e.g., www.mybigcartelstore.com) into the custom domain field and click Save.
9.Wait 24 hours for the DNS propagation to be completed.
