Firefox error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long

Most likely SSL certificate has been installed improperly on your server. We strongly recommend you to contact your hosting company and ask their technical department to fix the issue. If site that you would like to secure is hosted with Namecheap Hosting please submit a ticket to Hosting -- Technical department to get assistance.

In case you are the administrator of your own virtual private server or dedicated server you may try the recommendations below.

  • Make sure that port 443 is open and enabled on your server. This is the standard port for https communications.
  • If SSL is using a non-standard port then FireFox 3 can sometimes give this error. Check if secure connection is running on port 443.
  • If using Apache2 you should check that you are using port 443 for SSL connection. This can be done by setting the ports.conf file as follows
  • — clip —
    Listen 80
    Listen 443 https
    — clip —

  • Ensure that you do not have more than one SSL certificate sharing the same IP address. Every certificate is to have its own dedicated IP.
  • If using Apache2 check your vhost config. Some users have reported changing VirtualHost to _default_ resolved the error.
