Newer ones like .SHOP, .TECH, and .PHOTOGRAPHY are new gTLDs, open to anyone regardless of location or industry.

How much do gTLD domains cost?

Most popular new gTLDs cost between $1 and $2 at registration. Tech-focused extensions like .APP and .DEV typically sit around $10 to $12. Specialty extensions like .INC can run into the hundreds. Many desirable .COM names are already taken, pushing registrants toward alternatives. At the same time, extensions like .AI, .APP, and .TECH have grown rapidly because they communicate something specific about a business before anyone clicks. The data suggests that when an extension fits well, registrants choose it regardless of price.

What is the difference between a gTLD and a ccTLD?

A gTLD is a generic extension open to anyone, anywhere, like .COM, .SHOP, or .TECH. A ccTLD is a country-code extension tied to a specific nation, like .UK, .DE, or .FR. Some ccTLDs have been adopted for non-geographic purposes, but gTLDs remain the most universally accessible option for businesses and individuals without geographic restrictions.

Are new gTLDs trustworthy?

Trust in new gTLDs is growing but still context-dependent. Traditional extensions like .COM and .ORG carry more inherent credibility for high-stakes interactions. The internet ran out of good .COM names a long time ago, and the domain space had to grow to keep up.
And it did. Significantly.
There are now over 1,200 new generic top-level domain extensions up for grabs, from .SHOP and .APP to .PHOTOGRAPHY and .LONDON. As of Q1 2026, new gTLDs account for 12.6% of all domain registrations globally, nearly double their share from just a few years ago.
And with ICANN opening its second-ever application round for the first time since 2012, that number is set to soar. Sure, .COM is still the most registered extension on the planet. But it's not the only winner anymore.
This data study brings together the latest market figures, expert insight, and the trends shaping the new gTLD space in 2026, so you can make a smarter call on what domains to pick up.
Before we get into the detail, here's what the data actually shows.
49.6 million new gTLD domains were registered globally as of Q1 2026, up 31.3% year over year.
12.6% of all domain registrations worldwide are now new gTLDs, up from 6.4% in 2021.
40.1% of Namecheap registrations in 2025 were .COM, down from 48% in 2020, a five-year shift that tells its own story.
404% growth for .SPACE in a single year, the fastest-growing extension in Namecheap's 2025 report.
55% growth for .AI in 2025, with Namecheap customers accounting for over 20% of all global .AI registrations.
50% of the most popular new gTLDs are priced between $1 and $2, making them genuinely accessible.
1,265 extensions are now delegated in the root zone, with more on the way following ICANN's 2026 application round.
A generic top-level domain is the part of a web address that comes after the final dot. .COM, .ORG, .NET, and newer extensions like .SHOP or .TECH are all gTLDs. Unlike country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) such as .UK or .DE, gTLDs aren't tied to a specific country or region, making them open to anyone, anywhere.
The difference between gTLD and ccTLD comes down to scope. One speaks to what you do, the other speaks to where you are. The new gTLD list has grown to over 1,200 extensions covering everything from industries to interests to communities, which is what makes the full list of new gTLD options worth exploring before you settle on a name.
A TLD tells people something about a website before they even click. Historically, .COM meant commercial, .ORG meant non-profit, and .GOV meant government. Instant context, built into the address.
New gTLDs take that idea further. A .PHOTOGRAPHY domain signals creative work. A .STORE signals a place to buy. Used well, a TLD is the first line of your brand story, and in 2026 there are more ways to tell it than ever before.
The original seven TLDs launched in 1984: .COM, .ORG, .NET, .INT, .EDU, .GOV, and .MIL. Each had a designated purpose, and for a while, that was enough. As the internet grew, so did the demand for more creative, more specific, more accessible addresses.
ICANN, the body that coordinates internet naming, launched its New gTLD Program in 2012. Applications opened on January 12 of that year, with the window closing in April 2012, drawing 1,930 submissions.
The first new gTLDs were delegated to the internet's root zone in October 2013, opening up categories like brands, languages, and geographic locations. Extensions like .CAMERA, .VOYAGE, and .CLOTHING suddenly existed where they hadn't before.
That was round one. Round two is happening right now. ICANN's 2026 application window opened on April 30 and runs for 105 days, making it the first major expansion of the domain name system in over a decade. The new gTLD impact of this round will take years to fully land, but the direction is clear.
When a new TLD comes to market, it moves through three stages.
Sunrise is reserved for trademark holders, giving brands first access to secure their name under a new extension. Early Access follows, where anyone can register before the general public, at a premium price. General Availability is the open market: first-come, first-served, standard pricing.
If you have your eye on a specific new extension, knowing which stage it's in matters. Getting in during Early Access costs more, but it beats losing the name to someone else.
The numbers tell a clear story. As of Q1 2026, there were 392.5 million domain name registrations across all TLDs globally, up 6.5% year over year. New gTLDs accounted for 49.6 million of those, a 31.3% increase in a single year.
To put that in context: in 2021, new gTLDs represented 6.4% of all registrations. Today that figure sits at 12.6%. The share has nearly doubled, and the trajectory hasn't flattened.
That growth isn't happening in spite of .COM. It's happening alongside it. The domain space is simply bigger than it used to be, and new gTLDs are claiming a growing slice of it. You can browse the full TLD list to see what's currently up for grabs.
According to Namecheap's own 2025 Domain Insights and Trends Report, which covers more than 22 million domains registered across Namecheap and Spaceship, here's how the top extensions performed last year.

A few things stand out. The fastest-growing extension of the year was .SPACE, up 404% from 35,028 registrations in 2024. Registrations of .AI grew 55%, with Namecheap customers accounting for over 20% of all global .AI registrations.
And with 88,635 registrations, .APP continued its steady climb, up 12%, consistent with the ongoing growth of the app economy.
The broader picture: .COM remains dominant, but five other extensions each crossed 400,000 registrations in a single year. That's not a footnote. That's a shift.
Registration data can tell you what people do. It's harder to say exactly why. But looking at how domains are actually being registered in 2025, a few patterns emerge worth paying attention to.
Price appears to drive volume, but not always. The extensions with the highest registration counts, .XYZ, .SHOP, and .SITE, are all priced between $1 and $2, suggesting cost is a significant factor for most registrants.
But the outliers complicate that story. With 88,635 registrations at a significantly higher price point, .APP suggests that when an extension genuinely fits a purpose, price becomes secondary. The same seems true of .AI, which grew 55% in a year driven by an industry actively seeking identity online.
The data points toward purpose over price when the fit is strong enough, though it's difficult to say that definitively from registration figures alone.
The .COM share trend is arguably the most telling signal. Its share of Namecheap registrations shifted from 48% in 2020 to 40.1% in 2025, a sustained five-year decline during a period of substantial overall growth.
That's not a collapse. .COM remains dominant by a significant margin. But it does suggest alternative extensions are earning genuine consideration rather than just picking up leftovers.
What the growth of .SPACE, .AI, and .APP probably tells us is that registrants are increasingly comfortable choosing an extension that communicates something specific, provided the industry context supports it. Whether that confidence extends to less obviously purposeful extensions is harder to read from the data alone.
There's a tempting but wrong answer here, which is that .COM always wins. The data doesn't support it, at least not universally.
For credibility-sensitive use cases like payments, healthcare, legal, and financial services, a traditional extension still carries the most trust. But for niche, creative, or industry-specific projects, a well-chosen new gTLD often outperforms a generic .COM by making your purpose immediately legible.
A .PHOTOGRAPHY domain tells a story. A random .COM doesn't.
For anyone priced out of their preferred .COM on the secondary market, the new gTLD space offers real alternatives at a fraction of the cost, without the SEO penalty that many people fear. The best TLD fits your name, your audience, and your purpose. In 2026, the number of extensions that can do that job has never been greater. Explore what's up for grabs.
No TLD has a built-in SEO advantage. Google treats new gTLDs the same as .COM and .ORG, so your extension won't help or hurt your rankings on its own. Content quality, site authority, and backlinks are what move the needle.
That said, a descriptive TLD can improve click-through rates by making your domain more immediately relevant in search results. A .STORE domain on a result for an online shop signals purpose before anyone clicks. As part of broader new gTLD strategies, that indirect benefit is worth factoring in.
The market data and registration trends point to some clear scenarios.
Your ideal name isn't available as a .COM. The most common reason, and a perfectly good one. A well-chosen new extension can produce a cleaner, more memorable domain than a compromised .COM variation ever would.
Your work belongs to a specific niche. Creative professionals, developers, local businesses, and industry specialists all benefit from extensions that signal what they do. Buying gTLD domains aligned to your field is increasingly a strategic choice, not a fallback.
You're expanding an existing brand. Registering additional extensions alongside your primary domain protects your brand and opens up marketing possibilities at low cost.
Budget is a real factor. With most popular new extensions priced between $1 and $2, the gTLD vs TLD cost difference can be significant, especially when your preferred .COM is sitting on a resale market at a steep premium.
Where traditional still wins. High-stakes credibility contexts. If your users need to trust you immediately, particularly with money or personal data, .COM and .ORG still carry the most weight. Know your audience before you decide.
Once you've picked your domain, keeping it safe matters as much as choosing it well.
Typosquatting, where someone registers a domain almost identical to yours to capture misdirected traffic, is one of the most common threats in the domain space. Phishing and social engineering attacks are others.
The basics go a long way: strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and staying alert to suspicious emails. For a deeper look, read our guide on how to prevent domain hijacking and cyber attacks.
New gTLDs have gone from a niche alternative to a mainstream choice, and the data backs it up. Nearly 50 million registrations. 12.6% of the entire global domain market. Growth that's outpacing traditional extensions year on year.
The stigma is fading. The prices are low. The availability is wide open. And the right extension can do something a compromised .COM never could: tell your story before anyone even clicks.
Your perfect domain is probably out there. It just might not end in .COM.
A gTLD, or generic top-level domain, is the extension at the end of a web address. Extensions like .COM, .ORG, and .NET are legacy gTLDs. Newer ones like .SHOP, .TECH, and .PHOTOGRAPHY are new gTLDs, open to anyone regardless of location or industry.
Between one and ten years, depending on the registrar. Set up auto-renewal from day one so you don't lose the name when it lapses.
Registration data points to two main drivers: availability and purpose.
Trust in new gTLDs is growing but still context-dependent. Traditional extensions like .COM and .ORG carry more inherent credibility for high-stakes interactions. For industry-specific or creative use cases, a well-chosen new gTLD can signal purpose and professionalism just as effectively, and in some cases more so than a generic .COM.
