How to set up an L2TP/PPTP VPN connection on TP-Link router

This tutorial will guide you through configuring FastVPN L2TP/PPTP connection on a TP-Link router and will allow you to establish a permanent VPN tunnel from your router.

Important! After setting up L2TP/PPTP VPN connection on your TP-Link router, your IP will be changed but your traffic will NOT be encrypted. This is because a TP-Link firmware does not currently support IPSec.

To ensure a proper work of FastVPN with TP-Link router, you will need:

  • A secure FastVPN connection (Don’t have one? Sign up here!);
  • An internet connection;
  • A compatible TP-Link router;
  • Access to your FastVPN account panel.

VPN Setup instructions

1. Login to the TP-Link  router’s control panel by entering its default address or to the address bar of your preferred browser (if you changed your router’s default IP address, enter the new one into your browser instead):

2. Navigate to the home screen and click on the Advanced tab. Select the Network option from the left-side menu:

3. Click on Internet below the Network tab:

4. Enter the details to the IPV4 tab as shown below:

  • Internet Connection Type: L2TP or PPTP (select from the drop-drown)
  • Username: your FastVPN account name from the FastVPN account panel(username@namecheap)
  • Password: your FastVPN password from the FastVPN account panel
  • Secondary Connection: Dynamic IP
  • VPN Server IP/Domain Name: enter your preferred server from the FastVPN account panel (e.g.
  • MTU size: 1460 (default)
  • Connection Mode: Manually
  • Max Idle Time: 0 minutes
Once done, click the Save button on the bottom of the IPV4 section:

5. Click the Connect button to enable the FastVPN connection on your router:

6. The Connect button turns grey and will establish a FastVPN connection on your TP-Link router:
