What is a domain name?

Domain name is a human readable and memorable representation of an IP address. Internet is a network of computers connected together and capable of communicating to each other using a network protocol called TCP/IP. In order for the machines to identify themselves, these machines are assigned a numeric value called an IP address (ex: 123.12.123.12). As it is not possible to remember all those numbers for all the different sites, a concept of domain name was introduced. How this is accomplished is — when some one types in a domain name like www.namecheap.com, then the browser communicates with a root domain name server that acts as a dictionary and provides the IP like 123.12.123.12. Then the browser can use that IP to communicate to the website.

How do I register a domain name?

Registering a domain name is very easy. Think of a name that suits your personal or business needs — like johnsmith.com or johnscoffeeshop.com etc. and try entering the name into the search box. It is not necessary for you to enter the extension (.com etc.) in the search box. You can choose the domain name extension (also called as TLD) from the dropdown and click GO, search button. Our website will try to find if a name called johnsmith is available in all the TLDs like .com, .net, .org, .us, .biz, .info, .cc, .ws, .tv, .bz, .nu etc. The result screen will have a checkbox next to it if the domain name is available in that extension. You can choose any available name that you want to register by checking the box and clicking the Add to Cart button. Once the domain is added to the cart you checkout and can get the domain registered.

Is there any difference between .com, .net, .us etc.?

There is no real difference in the technical standpoint. But there is some difference in popularity. .com are more popular than other TLDs. .biz. .info domains are new and are becoming popular. Us domains are available for public and can be registered by us residents and businesses. Us domains are becoming popular. The decision of the TLD depends on personal preferences and availability of a domain name in a particular TLD.

How long does it take for my domain to get activated?

Once you have registered the domain, please wait 24 to 48 hours for the domain name to get activated. But, in the mean time, you will be able to edit the settings of your domain.

Why does it take this long for the domain to get activated?

Once you complete the order, the domains are registered and information is stored at once in our system. But this information has to be propagated to all the root nameservers across the world which is bit slow.

Should I wait 24 to 48 hours whenever I change a domain name setting?

Yes and No. In case you have chosen namecheap as your nameserver (default), then changing settings like e-mail forwarding, url forwarding etc. will be almost instantaneous. But if you change the nameserver of your domain, then it might take sometime for the nameserver information to be propagated to all servers. If you have already setup signed for hosting, then we would recommend you changing the nameservers immediately after registration so that your domain will be ready to use once it is active.
