AI domain SEO Impact: Your questions answered

Will a .ai domain hurt your Google rankings? Short answer: no. Google treats .ai as a generic top-level domain, identical to .com for SEO purposes. But that doesn’t mean .ai is right for every business. Here’s what you actually need to know about .ai domains, search visibility, and brand perception.

Thinking about buying a .ai domain? Let’s answer some of the burning questions you might have before making your purchase.

Does Google treat .ai as a generic TLD?

Yes. Artificial intelligence has seen a surge in interest and demand since 2023.  In response, Google now treats .ai as a generic top-level domain (gTLD). This means that it’s available to anyone, for any purpose, regardless of location, and it’s treated identically to .com, .org, or .net in search rankings.

Does a .com domain rank better than .ai?

As always, search engine rankings are more affected by content quality, backlinks, UX, and technical best practices than TLD.

Is .ai considered a country-code domain?

No, it isn’t. But you wouldn’t be wrong for thinking it does. Until recently, .ai was the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla, a small country in the Caribbean. But as the now-familiar story goes, along came AI and changed everything.

In 2023, Google stopped treating .ai as a country code domain, treating it instead as a generic top-level domain (gTLD). This move was unsurprising, given the TLDs’ now ubiquitous association with artificial intelligence.

That means Google will treat your .ai domain just like other gTLDs like .com, .net, and .org.

Does changing to a .ai domain hurt SEO?

No, domain changes generally don’t affect SEO rankings. A mishandled domain migration might temporarily hurt SEO, but that’s not specific to .ai domains. Missing 301 redirects, broken links, duplicate content, and downtime have a larger negative impact on SEO.

Is a .ai domain right for you?

Since you’re looking into .ai domains, your business probably has something to do with artificial intelligence. If it doesn’t, you might want to consider a different domain name.

If it does, an .ai domain could be right for you. However, there are still some things you should think about before you buy:

  • Audience – who is going to visit your website or use your app? Are they tech-savvy innovators or your average person on the street? Knowing the difference can determine whether a .ai domain helps or hurts you. It’s hard to believe, I know, but some people still aren’t very familiar with artificial intelligence. A .ai domain could look suspicious to some audiences, especially older, non-technical ones. People tend to distrust unfamiliar TLDs, even if they’re totally legit.
  • Long-term – if you’re building tools that actively employ AI models, the .ai domain is a no-brainer. Some might think, however, that purchasing a .ai domain will make their enterprise appear cutting-edge, even if their offering is only indirectly related to artificial intelligence. That may be the effect right now, but perceptions can change. We don’t know how AI will be perceived in the coming years. A .ai domain may hurt your website later down the line. It’s unlikely, but a risk nonetheless. Ask yourself if .ai is truly relevant to your business, or are you just responding to the whims of the latest tech hype cycle?
  • Relevance – how are .ai TLDs currently being used? The actual LLMs and assistants tend to be .ai (like Claude, Perplexity, or similar tools, though ChatGPT uses .com), while the companies behind them use .com for their corporate websites. There aren’t any hard-and-fast rules on this yet, but it won’t hurt to consider what your app or website actually does and whether a .ai domain would accurately reflect that.

Is .ai good for SEO?

From an SEO standpoint, a .ai domain won’t hurt you since Google treats it like .com, .net, or .org. Your rankings depend on content quality, backlinks, and UX, not your TLD. That said, SEO is only one part of the equation. A .ai domain works best when it genuinely reflects what your business does. If AI is core to your product, it’s a smart choice. If you’re buying it purely for the tech-savvy signal, you’re betting on perception rather than substance.

Choose the domain that honestly represents your business, not the one that sounds most cutting-edge. Start looking now.
